New International Version
A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
English Standard Version
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
New Living Translation
A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
Three different translations of Psalm 23 start with, The Lord is my shepherd, and end with: I have all that I need, I lack nothing, I shall not want. This famous verse that we take for granted is so simple, yet so profound. If we really knew that the shepherd was caring, nurturing, and looking out for us, would we NEED anything else? In a world full of want, it’s hard to settle into the realization that we already have all that we need.
As I peruse Instagram, my heart is filled with “wants”. Online shopping, you got it, it ends with “I want…”
As I go about my day-to-day life, I am constantly learning that the more I let HIM satisfy – the more that I seek him – the less there is of my longing. As I sit here in silence, I let my mind rest on the fact that HE is my shepherd. Because we are like sheep that wander, our eyes deceive us, and we constantly lose our way. Luckily, we have a gracious Savior, who shepherds us back into his green pastures, where we truly can find peace, and fulfillment. Let him shepherd you back; lean on his grace, learn from his gentle prodding, and today mediate on the fact that, “he is our shepherd, therefore we have all that we need.”
