“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” Psalm 22:1
These are the exact same words that Jesus uttered on the cross. (Recorded in Matthew and Mark)
Yet, Psalm 22 was dated 1,000 years before Christ’s death.
Psalm 22 predates Christ and it predates the practice of crucifixions (it hadn’t even been invented) and yet it prophecies the event.
Similarly Psalm 22 ends with this statement-“he has done it.” Which so closely mirrors Jesus last words, “It is finished.”
I believe that Jesus’s fourth words on the cross show us how extremely agonizing it must have been to take on all of our sin; he felt forsaken, but I also believe that his words point to his Kingship and the fulfillment of this prophecy.
Through all the confusion, and darkness-he still gave the people surrounding him a glimpse of Hope by pointing to Psalm 22-the fulfillment of a prophecy that came to pass.
A God who brings history, time, and prophecy full circle. Oh the wondrous cross.
